Law firm SORAINEN invites you to attend a business breakfast focusing on transport law on Thursday 20 October – the key presentation focuses on the United Nations international convention on sea transport contracts, labelled "the Rotterdam Rules". In July this year Sweden, Estonia's biggest trade partner of Estonia, signed the Rules. The aim is to unify and homogenise many current conflicting rules about sea transport in one legal act. The key presenter is international maritime law expert Miquel Roca, who took part in putting together the Rotterdam Rules as a Spanish representative at the UN.

The Rotterdam Rules bring more clarity regarding who is responsible and liable for what, when, where and to what extent when it comes to transport by sea. The need for unified rules is clear as nearly 80% of world trade is conducted by sea. Furthermore, the Convention puts in place an infrastructure for the development of e-commerce in maritime transport, significantly reducing paperwork and costs. The Rotterdam Rules are the first rules governing carriage of goods by sea and connecting transport by land (both ways: on-board and onward), which so far requires separate contracts.

Additionally we will discuss a wide range of topics from transport of goods by sea to practical examples of court disputes in Estonia and abroad. SORAINEN's experienced lawyers in transport and related insurance law will give presentations. We are organising this event together with the Danish, Finnish, Spanish and Swedish Chambers of Commerce.

Miquel is the managing partner of top Spanish maritime law firm Blas de Lezo, highly regarded by leading international legal directories. He specialises in shipping, both wet and dry, and represents leading operators in the maritime sector in Spain.
