Sorainen became a partner of the “Foreign economic activities: the practice of interaction with foreign contracting parties from Russia, the Baltic States and CIS” conference

Time: 21 Dec 2016 – 21 Jan 2017
Working language: Russian

Sorainen became a partner of the “Foreign economic activities: the practice of interaction with foreign contracting parties from Russia, the Baltic States and CIS” conference organized by the “Professional interest” education centre and “Jurist” magazine.

Sorainen introduced the “Foreign trade contracts: schemes for working with foreign contracting parties” panel moderated by Maria Rodich.

In the context of the panel Sorainen Belarus associate Marina Golovnitskaya spoke on common mistakes while drafting and concluding foreign trade contracts:

  • insufficient attention to issues of checking the counteragent and signatory’s authority;
  • inaccurate wording of essential provisions;
  • “copy-pasting” formulaic force majeure and dispute resolution clauses;
  • perils of working with bilingual contracts;
  • technical mistakes while working with documents.

Marina focused on the most essential details and made specific recommendations (for example, a mandatory check of the counteragent’s draft of the contract with the use of Microsoft Office Word tools while negotiating the contract, a check of the contract provision on the prevailing language in both language versions).

Sorainen Latvia senior associate Raivo Raudzeps was the regional expert on Latvia. In his presentation he overviewed approaches to doing business in Latvia and specific features of the business environment, and licensing issues. He also covered contractual relationships between parties resident in Belarus and Latvia, including debt collection and dispute resolution strategies.

As Raivo notes, “the audience was very interested in the information on the recognition and enforcement of judgments in Latvia”.
