Seminar on VAT fraud cases in UK and Latvia

Sorainen Tax Practice Group is organising an exclusive seminar with representatives from the UK, to discover more about VAT fraud in the UK. Guest speakers will be Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting – Richard Baxter, who has over 25 years’ experience in indirect tax. He has worked extensively with large corporate clients on domestic and international VAT issues.

The second guest speaker will be Spaden Elmhirst (Business Development Lead - Government Financial Crime) from BAE Systems.

11:00-11:30  Richard Baxter will speak about:

  • a prudent approach by any company when choosing suppliers;
  • how to protect business against purchasing from fraudsters;
  • how the authorities and courts approach the ‘should have known’ test.

11:30- 12:00  Spaden Elmhirst - presentation on  software for companies for a safer choice of suppliers

12:00-12:20  questions, discussions and coffee break

12:20-12:40  senior associate Dace Everte will speak about VAT disputes in dealing with doubtful persons

12:40-13:00 Sorainen partner Jānis Taukačs will give insights on the opportunity to turn to the European Commission with a complaint about Supreme Court judgments in VAT fraud cases.

The event will take place on 27 April 2017 at the Sorainen office, Kr. Valdemāra Street 21, Riga, Latvia. The presentations of the seminar will be in both – English and Latvian. Registration begins at 10:45; the event begins at 11:00.
