On 14 November 2012, 90 years passed since the election of the first state president of the Republic of Latvia, Jānis Čakste. To mark this significant anniversary, the Chancery of the President organised several events in honour of the institution of the state presidency.

In line with tradition, the Chancery of the President organised on 14 November 2012 an international scientific conference in collaboration with the University of Latvia. This year, the conference assessed the activities of the institution of the state president. At the conference, lectures were given by experts and scientists of national history, foreign and national scientists and practitioners of politics and law. The speakers included SORAINEN specialist counsel Allar Jõks, who held the position of Chancellor of Justice of the Republic of Estonia from 2001 to 2008. Allar presented the topic “State president – a warrior for the rule of law or a symbol of democracy?”

The conference agenda was divided into three parts:

  • Reports by Latvian national experts and a discussion led by moderator Ivars Ījabs
  • Reports by foreign experts and a discussion led by moderator Daunis Auers
  • Discussion among new researchers about analysis of the presidency led by moderator Edgars Postars

The conference was also available for watching online. All those interested were invited to attend the conference.
