From 26 to 28 September 2013, a European congress of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) was held in Riga, the capital of Latvia. It was organised by the federation's Baltic chapter – FIABCI Baltic – in cooperation with real estate professional associations of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. For the first time in the more-than-60-year history of FIABCI, real estate market professionals from all over the world gathered in one of the Baltic states to exchange their experiences concerning one of the most pressing issues for many countries: “The new stage of the European real estate market: correction of mistakes”.

Traditionally only world-class specialists are involved in FIABCI congresses and conferences: presidents, shareholders and owners of the leading realtor, investment and developer companies; leaders of national and international professional associations; representatives of public and professional organisations; and government representatives.

At the congress, SORAINEN Latvia was represented by its partner, regional head of the Tax & Customs Team Jānis Taukačs, who was invited as an expert for the panel discussion on “Real estate taxes: to reduce or to raise?”, that took place on the business day of the event, 27 September.

Other important topics discussed at the congress included:

  • realities and perspectives of the real estate market in Europe;
  • real estate market stagnation or investors' paradise;
  • sectors that still represent value to investors;
  • European real estate markets after the economic crisis;
  • new decisions, new methods of working, new approaches;
  • comprehensive development of regions territories;
  • banks as friends, partners or competitors;
  • present-day banks' approach towards real estate project development;
