Discussion on copyright law

Place: Birojnīca Berga bazārs, Riga, Latvia
Time: 3 Sep 2013 16:00 - 18:00
Working language: English

Together with the launched 17th Baltic Sea Forum for Documentaries, a discussion on copyright law took place on 3 September. Participants of the discussion: director Simon Klose of the film Pirate Bay, social anthropologist Klāvs Sedlenieks, DJ and music journalist Toms Grēviņš, e-library founder Edmunds Vanags, film blogger Ģirts Luste, technology blogger Kristaps Skutelis as well as SORAINEN associate Andris Tauriņš.

“They try legal tricks, and we, in turn, conduct technical tricks. This is like an uninterrupted tactical game with various weapons,” says Peter Sunde, one of founders of Pirate Bay, in the film TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay – Away From Keyboard (Sweden, 2013). The discussion on copyright was based on the plot of the film included in the agenda of this festival; nevertheless, the discussion organised in the office-cafe Birojnīca covered a broader subject touching on the Latvian specifics and technology development.

The discussion intended to address the present day and the future without becoming too immersed in the historic aspects while taking into account that the main player in this game is the consumer of a copyrighted product.

A trailer of the film TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay – Away From Keyboard is available here.

The discussion was recorded by Radio Latvia.
