Sorainen both Baltic Tax Firm of the Year and Transfer Pricing Firm of the Year

Sorainen won two awards ‒ as Baltic States Tax Firm of The Year and as Baltic States Transfer Pricing Firm of The Year ‒ at the European Tax Awards organized by the International Tax Review (ITR) and presented at the Savoy in London on 17 May 2018.

Said Jānis Taukačs, head of the Sorainen Tax & Customs Practice Group: “These awards recognise our team’s collaboration and dedication in seeking exact solutions for our clients, no matter whether it is a legal issue or a tax issue.” Jānis went on to note that: “Sorainen demonstrates sound strategic vision to strengthen both Tax and Transfer Pricing (TP) practices. Yesterday we became the first law firm in our market to receive both Tax and Transfer Pricing awards, confirming that TP is no longer only a Big4 prerogative. We are highly appreciative of our clients, who trust us with their complex tax and TP matters and allow us to demonstrate our team’s capabilities across the region”.

Sorainen cases in 2017 that were evaluated by ITR included:

  • assisting Uralkali in obtaining an advanced pricing agreement for a business transfer transaction in Latvia;
  • advising Nasdaq on a merger between the central securities depositories of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia;
  • advising Nordea on the largest transaction to involve combining operations in the history of the Baltic financial markets in 2016 and 2017;
  • assisting blockchain-based green energy trading platform WePower in obtaining a ruling from the tax authorities confirming tax treatment of issuance of crypto-currency;
  • updating and supplementing TP documentation for Bridgestone Baltics, Marginalen group and other companies.

ITR, part of the Euromoney Legal Media Group, is a trusted publication and online resource for corporate tax directors, policymakers and practitioners. The awards were judged according to size (indicating what a tax team is capable of taking on), innovation (proving that the firm addresses tax issues that cannot be fixed by straightforward solutions) and complexity (highlighting the firm’s ability to address tax issues that are out of the ordinary).

Sorainen is the Baltic Tax Firm of the Year for the 7th time since the Baltics have been evaluated (as of 2010), and TP Firm of the Year for the 2nd time.
