Measures from the Common Charger Directive (2022/2380) now apply to all electronic devices sold in the EU

The Council of the EU approved the EU’s Common Charger Directive in October 2022, and manufacturers were given a transition period to adjust their designs and ensure compliance. The rules apply to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earbuds sold in the EU from 28 December 2024. Now, all new devices sold must support USB-‑C charging. The measures will apply to laptops from 28 April 2026.

Entry into force: 1 January 2025

The first-ever bilateral framework agreement between the EU and its member states and Japan, the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), entered into force on 1 January 2025. The agreement will enhance security cooperation and collaboration in the fight against terrorism and serious international crimes, as well as against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

EU rules to improve Gender Balance in corporate boards enter into force

Entry into force: 27 December 2024

The Gender Balance on Corporate Boards Directive entered into force at the end of 2024. It aims for a more balanced gender representation on the boards of listed companies across all EU Member States. The Directive sets a target for EU large listed companies of 40% of the underrepresented sex among their non-executive directors and 33% among all directors. Companies must meet the targets set in the Directive by 30 June 2026.
