European Commission launches review of Foreign Subsidies Regulation

The Foreign Subsidy Regulation (FSR) took effect on 13 July 2023. This new set of rules enables the Commission to address any distortions to competition caused by foreign subsidies in the internal market. It allows the EU to ensure a level playing field for all companies, while remaining open to trade and investment. The FSR requires the Commission to review its practice of implementing and enforcing the Regulation by July 2026 and every three years thereafter and to present a report to the European Parliament and the Council, accompanied, if appropriate, by relevant legislative proposals.

European Commission to update air service rules

The European Commission is inviting citizens, travellers and stakeholders to express their views via a public consultation on the revision of the Air Services Regulation – the framework governing access to the EU internal market for aviation, and operations within it. The Regulation determines, for example, when and where EU airlines can operate freely within the EU, and how ticket prices should be displayed to consumers.

Media Freedom Act enters into application to support democracy and journalism

Entry into application: 8 August 2025

In February 2024, the Parliament and the Council adopted the European Media Freedom Act to safeguard media freedom and journalistic independence across the EU. The regulation has been gradually applicable in Member States since May 2024, with its core provisions taking effect as of 8 August 2025. The law increases transparency of media ownership and state advertising, strengthens public media independence, and protects journalists and their sources, while requiring digital platforms to avoid arbitrarily restricting independent media content.

European Commission updates harmonised standards for wireless and satellite communication equipment

Adopted: 13 August 2025

On 13 August 2025, the European Commission adopted Implementing Decision 2025/1741, updating the list of harmonised standards under the Radio Equipment Directive. The changes concern wireless digital video links, satellite earth stations and systems, base stations, and short-range devices, ensuring that manufacturers can rely on the latest technical specifications to demonstrate compliance with EU safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and spectrum efficiency requirements.
