EDPS unveils revised Guidance on Generative AI, strengthening data protection in a rapidly changing digital era

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has released updated guidelines on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by EU institutions, bodies, offices, and agencies (EUIs). The aim is to strengthen data protection in an increasingly dynamic digital landscape.
The revised guidance incorporates recent technological developments and feedback from EUIs, providing clearer and more practical instructions to ensure compliance with Regulation (EU) 2018/1725. Key updates include an improved definition of generative AI, a new compliance checklist, clarified roles for controllers and processors, and detailed recommendations on lawful data processing and safeguarding individuals’ rights.
