About me

I am a senior associate specialising in finance and insurance, with a particular focus on investment services, fintech and technology. I have several years of experience working at credit institutions on matters related to capital markets, anti-money laundering and countering terrorism financing, and technology, both in implementing regulatory requirements within organisations and participating in transactions. I am passionate about complicated matters that require an analytical approach and complex solutions, and motivated by successfully helping clients to solve challenging compliance- and technology-related issues by providing practical and solution-focused advice.

Professional highlights

Banking operations. From my several years of experience in the banking sector, I gained invaluable insights into internal governance and risk management within organisations. This significantly enhances my ability to provide practical advice on organising internal structures and processes, and addressing compliance matters for clients applying for licenses or authorisations from the Bank of Latvia.

Financial technologies. I was involved in organising the outsourcing management process within a financial institution, which included drafting the necessary policies and procedures, supporting risk assessments, negotiating contracts, primarily with IT companies and facilitating communication with the Bank of Latvia. Later, I actively participated in the implementation of DORA* requirements. This experience provided me with hands-on knowledge in the field of IT, in particular with respect to system operability and data security, through collaboration with internal IT teams and IT service providers. It enables to offer solution-oriented support to clients on DORA implementation matters.

Anti-money laundering and sanctions. Working with internal procedures in a financial institution allowed me to observe the practical aspects of the implementation and functioning of AML/CTPF regulations. This helps me to provide clients with a practical approach in resolving related issues.

Dispute resolution. I have represented financial companies during litigation processes related to mortgage and leasing cases, as part of which I was involved in preparing statements of claim and explanations, and participated in court hearings, helping clients to develop and defend their positions before courts of different instances.

Capital markets. I use to work with extensive and complex documentation required for executing derivative transactions on a cross-border basis (ISDA, GMRA, GMSLA agreements), including covered bond elements, where not only legal and business, but also operational capacity and risk considerations are all crucial. I have also participated in the implementation of EU-level regulatory requirements (EMIR**). This project required a deep understanding of regulatory demands and market documentation specifics, and adapting them to the organisation’s operations, taking into account the legal, business and operational risks.

Other activities. In addition to my practical legal work, from time to time I like to contribute to the development of legal thinking by publishing articles on topics such as financial markets, banking law, or commercial law. It was rewarding to see that one of these articles was cited in a judgment by the Senate of the Supreme Court of Latvia.
