Experience

Agris Repšs is a partner and leads two of our Practice Groups in Latvia: Dispute Resolution, which he heads, and Commercial & Regulatory, which he co-heads.

Since 1995, when Agris started practising law, he has developed experience in mutually connected areas of law, as well as a hands-on approach to resolving legal issues in business sectors. He is best known for handling high-profile litigation with his particular experience in complex international commercial arbitration and investment arbitration. Over the years Agris has helped clients with issues related to public procurement, regulatory, intellectual property, technology, contracts and franchise agreements, as well as enforcement of foreign court judgments and other issues involving international civil procedure.

Agris offers experience in litigation matters in civil, administrative and arbitration courts dealing with issues of international trade and transport, commercial and company law, maritime, intellectual property, information technology and employment. He has acted as counsel in multimillion arbitration cases in Latvia and advises on investment arbitration issues. He also has been counsel for Lithuanian investor E energija against the Latvian state in Latvia’s first ICSID case. Much of the workload of our Latvian Dispute Resolution Practice Group led by Agris consists of international civil procedural issues, securing claims in support of foreign litigation, enforcing foreign court judgements and arbitral awards, asset freezing and tracking and managing investigations for the firm’s major international and local clients. Examples of successful asset recovery cases include DISTRIPATES GESTION ET PARTICIPATIONS, a favourable judgment for the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, a new debt collection regime for IDEAL-Trade Service, newspaper Bauskas Dzīve’s fight for media independence, “speed camera” procurement, and the BIGBANK appeal involving the Consumer Rights Protection Centre’s decision.

Agris advises on personal data protection matters. Among his clients are leading modern building materials manufacturer Knauf; science-led global healthcare company GlaxoSmith and American multinational document management corporation Xerox.

With his wide experience in patent, trade mark, internet domain name, copyright, design, licensing, advertising and sponsorship disputes and advisory work, Agris’s business focus is on technology-rich sectors – pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, IT, telecommunications, the online gaming industry and the media. His experience includes: a trade mark dispute involving “Olimpia”, representing CrossFit, Robert Bosch and Primekss against intellectual property infringement, supporting the client in a copyright dispute with the Latvian authors' society, trade mark registrations for “NEMO”, “DATAMED”, as well as a landmark decision in the Viagra case. Technology and telecom area-related highlights include: Prior Rights development of innovative mobile application, an interactive gambling licence for Betsson Group, and expansion of Spotify, Uber and Cogent to the Baltics.

Agris’ experience is unique in supporting the government bailout of Latvia’s largest private bank during the financial crisis in 2008 and representing the Latvian Parliament and Cabinet of Ministers before the Constitutional Court. Moreover, Agris has been representing the interests of Uber in preparing new laws that allow ridesharing services in Latvia. He has also been acting for the Latvian Seed Growers Association in introducing a more efficient regulatory framework for protecting and enforcing seed breeders’ rights in Latvia. He acted for the Latvian Jewish Communities in a working group set up by the Government to return properties to the Latvian Jewish community, which perished during the Holocaust. He has been an active member of the working group at the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry working on the new Arbitration Law.

Agris is a listed arbitrator at the Arbitration Court of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He is also an arbitration panellist with the ".eu" alternative dispute resolution (ADR) centre of the Czech Arbitration Court, which hears all disputes related to ".eu" domain names. He frequently advises and represents clients in international arbitration matters.

Agris has authored a range of publications on legal topics including dispute resolution, employment law and administrative procedure. He has co-authored several books and is an acknowledged seminar and conference speaker. He is a board member at the Riga Graduate School of Law, where he has lectured on international commercial arbitration, e-commerce and business law. He has also lectured on business law at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.

Agris is recommended by many international publications, including:

  • The Legal 500 for dispute resolution, transport, IT, intellectual property and telecommunication practices (“‘prompt and flexible advice’ to international companies”);
  • Best Lawyers in litigation, arbitration and mediation, intellectual property, information technology, telecommunications, administrative, advertising and public law in Latvia;
