About me
As head of the firm’s Competition and Regulatory practice in Latvia, I provide legal assistance and establish strategy in complex competition law, intellectual property, data protection, consumer and environment law matters, as well as in pharmacy, electronic communications and media regulation issues. My work often takes the form of project management, finding the necessary specialists and building a team to achieve the best and most creative solutions. I believe that my work as an attorney has gained much support from my original education in philosophy. I am also very much interested in ESG – one of the key topics in boardrooms all around the world, and strongly related to regulatory standards.
Professional highlights
IP advice and litigation. In addition to having successfully helped many clients protect against infringements of their intellectual property and misuse of their creative work, as a professional patent attorney in trademark matters I regularly represent clients in trademark objection cases before Latvia’s Industrial Property Board of Appeal. In turn, while representing a client in a patent dispute in the pharmacy industry, I obtained a beneficial solution in an interim measure case and assisted in setting a strategy for the case.
Competition law and consumer right advice. In advising clients on competition law, my focus is on compliance and prevention. I have assisted clients to achieve a settlement in infringement proceedings, and have organized competition law training for companies in the IT, insurance, food, and pharmaceutical sectors. In the meanwhile, I help clients fight wrongs, especially by drafting complaints about violations of competition neutrality. Likewise, I assist clients in navigating the complex consumer right laws by supporting and finding the best solution to prevent infringements.
Pharmaceutical, health care, environmental and food sector regulations. I have advised many pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors as well as industry associations on applying Latvian regulations and rules on distribution, pricing of medicines, compensated medicines, advertising pharmaceuticals, and relationships with patients and governmental organizations. I have helped manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and food additives in relation to product labelling and compliance issues. During recent years, I have been solving problems related to environmental protection, as this topic is gaining in importance and affects many industries.
Privacy and data protection. One area of my practice lies in managing complex GDPR implementation and compliance projects for clients in such industries as consumer lending, real estate management, international trading companies, and medical institutions. Another is spreading privacy awareness through lectures and presentations on GDPR, with special focus on communication and marketing. I am especially proud of creating GDPR guidelines for the Latvian association of communication agencies.
Media law and creative industries. For over fifteen years I have served as the Latvian correspondent for the European Audiovisual Observatory newsletter on audiovisual media law, and also acted as the Latvian expert in surveys on film funding, European audiovisual works, on-demand services and media regulatory bodies. In addition, I have successfully defended TV broadcasters in defamation litigation, provided pro bono advice to the Latvian Association of Journalists on creating a media ombudsman institution, as well as consulting authors and creative individuals on legal matters. I am delighted to give lectures to diverse audiences of journalists on the right to information and freedom of expression, for example, in recent years I have visited regional media in Aizkraukle, Balvi, and Cēsis.
