In the Summer edition of Eurofenix, Edvins Draba, Senior Associate of Sorainen Latvia, interviewed Christel Dumont, Senior Counsel – Attorney at Law, Dentons, Luxembourg, about the arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) in legal practice: the tools she uses, the changes they have brought to daily work, their limitations and the continuing importance of professional judgment. This time, we swap roles.
The change of interviewer also brings a change of perspective. Luxembourg and Latvia are both relatively small European jurisdictions, but the availability of legal information, language resources and market specific material can be very different. At the same time, lawyers are no longer necessarily using one artificial intelligence tool. Increasingly, they work within an ecosystem of general purpose and legal-specific AI platforms, sometimes with several different underlying AI models available within the same tool.
This perhaps reflects a broader shift in AI adoption. The first stage was largely about discovering what generative AI could do. The next is about learning how to choose between different tools, integrate them into everyday workflows and use them efficiently without losing sight of their limitations.
So, Christel now asks Edvins how AI is finding its place in his daily practice in Latvia – and what becomes apparent once the initial novelty starts to wear off.
