Sorainen successfully represented the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (SDPL), one of the major political parties in the country, in a dispute with Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC).

The SDPL appealed the CEC’s finding, which had resulted in the party not receiving half a year’s subsidy of EUR 504 000 before elections to municipal councils, mayors and the European Parliament. The court annulled the decision not to grant a subsidy and changed the sanction to EUR 400 000 instead of EUR 504 000. This means that the party will regain EUR 104 000. The court’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.

According to Sorainen partner Žygimantas Pacevičius, this is an exceptional instance in case law. The court declared that the CEC made a mistake and revoked part of its decision.

Comments Žygimantas Pacevičius: “Although the LSDP complaint was only partially satisfied, we consider the decision to be a victory and are pleased that part of the state subsidies was returned to the client”.

The client’s interests were represented in court by partner Žygimantas Pacevičius and senior associate Jurgita Karvelė.
