About me
As a member of our Dispute Resolution and Risk Management team, I primarily resolve disputes in corporate, insurance and finance matters.
Professional highlights
Insurance law. One of my main areas of focus is insurance disputes. I have represented clients in various insurance dispute negotiations and court cases. One of my notable cases involves representing the largest electricity companies in Finland and Estonia in obtaining approximately EUR 35 million in compensation for the repair costs of the Balticconnector gas pipeline, which was damaged by the Chinese vessel NewNew Polar Bear. I have also led matters connected with other major cross-border infrastructure incidents in the Baltic Sea region, with implications for national security, including the EstLink 2 incident linked to the vessel Eagle S and damage to undersea telecommunications infrastructure involving the vessel Fitburg. Since 1 October 2024, I have served as an insurance mediator for the Estonian Insurance Association and the Estonian Motor Insurance Bureau for a five-year term.
Corporate and finance. I advise clients in a range of corporate and finance matters, with a particular focus on disputes. I have acted in a variety of complex corporate and finance-related matters. One of the most notable has been leading a team on the special audit of Eesti Energia concerning derivative transactions, which examined the exercise of management board members’ duty of care and reported estimated losses of approximately EUR 175.8 million.
A detailed understanding of the judicial system. Before joining Sorainen, I worked at the Supreme Court of Estonia and the civil chamber of the Tallinn Circuit Court. As a result, I have engaged in resolving numerous civil disputes and successfully supported their resolution. I have had the opportunity to work closely with judges and jurists, whose opinions and standpoints are influential in the Estonian legal landscape.
Comprehensive knowledge in civil rights matters. I have notable experience with civil proceedings and resolving different civil disputes (e.g. contract and obligation law; bankruptcy; family and inheritance matters). In the Supreme Court, part of my job also involved evaluating and analysing challenges that Estonian civil judges and the judicial system face, and finding suitable solutions.
Supporting future lawyers. I believe that learning is a lifelong process, which is why I continue increasing my knowledge by taking part in international courses and training. A lot of the things I know I have learned through teaching others. In 2017, I began teaching private international law at the University of Tartu and I have been teaching ever since. These days, I mainly teach contract and obligation law, but I have also given seminars on legal analysis and argumentation, and supervised students participating in the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
Strong arguments. Prior to my career in resolving legal disputes, I was an active debater and successfully participated in tournaments. I concluded my debating career by taking part in the European Universities Debating Championships. At university, my interest in debating developed into an interest in resolving legal disputes – which is why I decided to pursue a career in litigation. During my university years, I participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Since graduating, I have been implementing my argumentation skills in my professional environment.
