We represent clients in court proceedings concerning the recognition and registration of same-sex partnerships in Lithuania. Our team provided free legal advice and representation, helping our clients secure favourable rulings in two appeal cases and two cases before courts of first instance.

In one of the appeal cases, Klaipėda Regional Court rejected the Justice Ministry’s appeal and upheld a lower court ruling requiring the state to register the partnership of two women who had married abroad.

The court confirmed that, until parliament adopts legislation establishing a procedure for registering partnerships, couples may apply directly to the courts to have their partnerships recognised and registered.

The ruling is significant in ensuring equal legal recognition of the family relationships of same-sex couples in Lithuania. The court relied on the Constitutional Court’s finding that the Civil Code provision defining partnership solely as a union between a man and a woman was unconstitutional.

In addition to successful appeal cases, our team also represented applicants in two further disputes concerning the recognition of same-sex partnerships, securing favourable rulings before courts of first instance.

In all these cases, our partner Monika Mališauskaitė-Vaupšienė and senior associate Marijus Dingilevskis advised and represented the clients free of charge (pro bono), contributing to the protection of equal rights for all.
